Do allot of you run Windows 2000 as your main OS?

The ones that do how do they like it? To my understanding I thought it has allot of issues with games running on it? Among other software?

Yes. I love it. It runs virtually all Windows native games fine (all I play is UT and DiabloII, so I don't have a problem ) and any GOOD software will run on Win2K. Badly coded stuff will not, but you shouldn't run into much of that.

yes I run w2k as my "main" os. Some games I can't play, but thats fine with me, I'll take the stability and better memory managment over win9x anyday...

Fresh. You can upgrade, especially if you don't want to deal with backing shit up, but it changes the directory setup slightly in an upgrade setup, so it's not a good as a pure NT environment.

Go professional if you do. Unless you have a network, you don't want anything more. If you're still uncomfortable with computers, I'd stay with Win9x, personally. It's easier to deal with...

I have a different opinion.

Pros:
- Windows 2000 Pro is a cool OS.
- Stable (More than NT and 9x and Me)
- Best Memory Management
- Love the new TCP/IP stack and interface
- Nice addition to Add/Remove Programs
- Love how you can browse your HD or Networked drives using the start menu.
- Security is very well done.

Cons:
- Was a bear for me to install and get running "right" on my Athlon setup:
---Athlon 750
---Abit KA7-100 MB
---ASUS V6800
---SB Live/Value
---128MB RAM
---19" Monitor
---Plextor 12x10x32x CD-RW
- Worked for about 1 week before it fell to shit.
---CD-RW no longer recognized as CD-RW
---3.5 floppy recognized as 5.25 floppy even when BIOS said 3.5 floppy
---CD-RW no longer recognized AT ALL!!!!!

I said to hell with all those problems and took off Win2k Pro. Maybe the SP1 for Win2k would fix a lot of that but to hell with it! I'll keep what I got now!

Pita are you saying that there is allot of maintenance with W2k? Or the setup is technical?

My Pc runs pretty good actually really good, but I just want to stay ontop of the new software and not fall behind. So if it's worth installing I'll do it! LOL

Correct you may not run into these problems. However it is not worth paying for this upgrade. If you are a home user you don't "need" win2k. If you want some of the features of Win2k wait for Windows Me and use that. But paying to upgrade to Win2k is a joke! Win 98 is fine... Either get Win Me this fall or wait for Windows 2001. Don't waste your time nor money on this OS.

Moose,

Thanks for the info. I can get a copy of Win2K for free but I'll think about if I want to spend the time installing it.

How different is the memory handling in it? I have 256 Dimms....and I always feel like I don't have enough memory. My system frlies along pretty good, but I guess I just like over doing it.

I agree with Moose. Especially until they have a few more service packs out for it... it tends to be much more directed at power users and businesses. I like it becasue of the security over Win98 (I'm hopping on a cable modem soon) and it's mem management, etc. It runs just peachy-keen on my PII-450, so I don't worry too much about it. It has been a bit flaky lately, tho. I don't know why. I need to clean out the registry...

Better memory management means not having to restart periodically when the system bogs down, Vukky. (a la Win9x)

i wish there was an OS for x86 that didn't require much maintenence (like be), was highly supported (like win9x/2k), and wasn't confusing as hell (like linux)

siggghh...back to the mac...
