I don't think there really is a strongest item. Someone will always find something better, eventually...

Right now, my necromancer has the strongest weapon from among all my charachters. It's a funny looking two handed axe that you can find in 3rd act the first time. I think it's a giant axe, it's an rare item. Damage at my strength being 100 is something like 120-230 damage. Double the damage with the Curse spell he, he, he...
Or imagine half of that being added to my health with each hit after I cast Life Tap... Life is sweet

I also have Light Gauntlets +17 Dex, Plated Belt +18 Str. I don't remember correctly now (haven't played for a while), but from all my items I have about 1/2 of my health and 1/3 of mana. My amulet gives me 20-30% of resistance to everything, my boots increase my speed and my rings add heavily to gold I collect from monsters, resistances and attack rating.

OK, maybe I'm boasting too much about my character, but what I'm trying to prove is that there is no "best" item. It's a sound combination of them that makes up a good character

BTW: What's your best character?

Oh yeah? I guess you're lucky I don't have internet access at my house. Otherwise I would show you how well my equipment works. I have 100 str because, as you could have read I have a belt +18 STR and some of my other items give me bonuses to str also.

I GUESS this might work in nightmare act 1 and maybe act 2... but wait 'til you get to act 3 and 4, and then Hell mode. The monsters will be kicking your ass in one hit, so you'll be relying more on your minions/Iron Maiden to do the killing.

And BTW, I've got multiple characters in Act 4/Hell mode. A level 65 Bow Amazon, a level 75 Bec-De-Corbin WW Barb, a level 45 (not in act 4 yet, still in act 1 hell) tweaker sorc, etc.

They're already kicking my ass The only useful thing against them is the Raise Monster skill AND my axe (I especially enjoy raising ranged units)

I take it you've never played on Battle.net.

Having a level 75 barb/amazon isn't anything spectacular. A paladin/sorceress is, but not a barb or amazon.

It's not like it's difficult or anything to get it that high. I can get a character to level 65 or so in a weeks worth of play (with about an hour and a half of play each weekday, and 4 hours each day of the weekend [so that would be 8 hours total over the weekend]). That's really not THAT much time, just join all 8 player games, and you'll level up very fast.

But to answer Obsidian's question..

The most damaging SWORD is the Executioner Sword. It's an exceptional Great Sword, and does 45-80 damage two handed normally (I'm not sure about one hand damage for barbarians). Rare exe. swords can get to around 150 damage max.

I knew all the time that the guy that told me that he had a Nightmare war sword version that did something like 150-200 dmg. was bullshitting me.
